Morne's adjustable couta trace

Step 15

Image 15 {This is what the finished bait looks like to the couta seeing it from the side. There is no hooks visible and nothing abnormal sticking out of the bait. She will swim dead straight because of the barrel sinker. Let out +-80meters of line and put a down rigger depending on depth and current to make the bait swim at desired depth }

Step 1
Sardine and mackerel couta trace.
Image 1 {Take some no 6 Wire and put a small 90 degree bent on the end of the wire.}

Step 2
Image 2 {Tie a the thinnest trace wire you can get to the eye of the hook and cut off at about 20 to 30 cm}

Step 3
Image 3 {Put the bent into the eye of the hook and run it down the outside shaft of the hook. Use the thin wire to tie down your bent trace wire to the shaft of the hook. Once you come to the end of the shaft work the wire back through one of the inevitable loop holes created by starting of the tie down process to keep all intact and reverse swing the wire to keep it from undoing itself. You could use nylon but I'm a lazy bugger and do it with a very thin trace wire }

Step 4
Image 4 {Finished product of tying down the trace wire – this is what it should look like}

Step 5
Image 5 {Slide through a half ounce barrel sinker through the trace wire and make an S bent perpendicular to the hook as illustrated. This will prevent losing the sinker. You could use a larger sinker if you whant. }

Step 6
Image6 and 7 {Now for the treble traces; Make a bent of an inch and a half on your trace wire push through the eye of the treble over the centre piece and slide the lose end beck through the eye of the hook. Tighten nice and strong and finish off the trace wire.}

Step 7
Image6 and 7 {Now for the treble traces; Make a bent of an inch and a half on your trace wire push through the eye of the treble over the centre piece and slide the lose end beck through the eye of the hook. Tighten nice and strong and finish off the trace wire.}

Step 8
Image 8 {Cut both pieces of wire off the length will depend on more or less the size of the baits being used}

Step 9
Image 9,10 and 11 {Push through the trace wire of one of the treble trace through the base of the shaft of the other treble trace and make a look in the one being pushed through. Bend the other trace wire and push through the loop. Now make a loop in the other trace wire that will be attached to the sinker hook. This will allow the bottom hook to be movable to be able to place it at the right spot on the tail. This is very strong and will not brake off while fighting the fish}

 Step 10
Image 9,10 and 11 {Push through the trace wire of one of the treble trace through the base of the shaft of the other treble trace and make a look in the one being pushed through. Bend the other trace wire and push through the loop. Now make a loop in the other trace wire that will be attached to the sinker hook. This will allow the bottom hook to be movable to be able to place it at the right spot on the tail. This is very strong and will not brake off while fighting the fish}

 Step 11
Image 9,10 and 11 {Push through the trace wire of one of the treble trace through the base of the shaft of the other treble trace and make a look in the one being pushed through. Bend the other trace wire and push through the loop. Now make a loop in the other trace wire that will be attached to the sinker hook. This will allow the bottom hook to be movable to be able to place it at the right spot on the tail. This is very strong and will not brake off while fighting the fish}

Step 12
Image 12 {Put the hook with the sinker attached through the lower and upper jaw of the bait making sure it is centred now push back the remaining piece of wire stuck out of barrel sinker back into the flesh of the bait just below the gills. This will ensure that the sinker stays snugg to the bait.}

Step 13
Image 13 and 14 {Now place the trebles into the fish on one side only if trolling the left side of the ski the trebles should e on the right side of the bait. Sardine and mackerel is very soft and the couta bites straight through it and gets hooked up on the treble.}

Step 14
Image 13 and 14 {Now place the trebles into the fish on one side only, if trolling the left side of the ski the trebles should be on the right side of the bait. Sardine and mackerel is very soft and the couta bites straight through it and gets hooked up on the treble.}
